Coherent Medical in Palo Alto launched my engineering career and established an early foundation in lasers, optics, thermal hardware, precision assembly, and medical equipment.

Systems and components

  • Assembled cabinet-scale CO₂ surgical-laser hardware and optical delivery components.
  • Worked on ophthalmic photocoagulation equipment integrated with a Zeiss slit-lamp assembly.
  • Built attenuators, heat sinks, mounts, and production sub-assemblies.
  • Supported precision optical and mechanical assembly in Coherent Medical's newer Palo Alto facility near Highway 101.

Recognized assembly improvement

  • Created a compact half-moon bearing-loading fixture from formed material, wire, and heat-shrink.
  • Held rows of small ball bearings in alignment during assembly of the Zeiss mechanism.
  • Made a difficult precision-assembly operation faster and more repeatable.
  • Received internal recognition for the improvement at approximately age 20.
